Five Realistic Spring Cleaning and Decluttering Goals to Refresh Your Space

Spring cleaning can feel overwhelming, especially when faced with piles of clutter and neglected corners. Setting clear, manageable goals helps turn this daunting task into a refreshing experience. This post outlines five effective and realistic spring cleaning and decluttering goals anyone can achieve. These goals focus on practical steps that create lasting change - without requiring an entire weekend or professional help (although I'm more than happy to provide help if you need it!)

Clear One Room Completely

Instead of trying to clean the whole house at once, pick one room to focus on. This goal is achievable and provides a visible sense of accomplishment. For example, choose your bedroom or kitchen and:

  • Remove everything from surfaces and storage spaces

  • Sort items into keep, donate, recycle, or trash piles

  • Clean all surfaces, including floors, windows, and furniture

  • Keep only the items you use regularly and love!

Completing one room creates momentum and motivates you to tackle other areas. It also improves your daily environment immediately. I recommend choosing a high impact space or a space that causes you anxiety day-to-day for the largest bang for your buck!

Declutter Flat Surfaces

Flat surfaces like countertops, tables, and desks tend to collect clutter quickly. Setting a goal to clear these spaces can make your home feel instantly cleaner and more organized. To do this:

  • Remove all items from the surface

  • Sort through the items and decide what to keep or relocate (if possible, set a goal to purge around 50%!)

  • Use trays, baskets, or organizers to categorize and group essentials neatly

  • Wipe down the surfaces before putting any items back

A clear surface reduces visual stress and makes cleaning easier in the future. A win/win!

Organize One Storage Area

Storage spaces such as closets, drawers, or cabinets often become catch-alls for miscellaneous items. Choose one storage area to organize thoroughly. For example, a kitchen pantry or a bedroom closet. Steps include:

  • Empty the storage area completely

  • Group similar items together (e.g., canned goods, cleaning supplies, clothing types)

  • Check expiration dates or usability and discard expired or broken items

  • Use bins, shelves, or dividers to keep items separated and accessible

This goal improves functionality and helps you find things faster in the future!

Create a Donation Box

Many people hesitate to declutter because they worry about where to put unwanted items. Setting up a dedicated donation box simplifies this process. Keep a box or bag in a convenient spot and:

  • Add items you no longer need but are in good condition

  • Schedule a regular drop-off date at a local charity or donation center

  • Encourage family members to contribute as well

This goal encourages ongoing decluttering and supports a good cause.

Establish a Daily 10-Minute Tidy Routine

Maintaining a clean and clutter-free home requires consistent effort, sorry to remind you. But it's very doable! A realistic goal is to spend just 10 minutes each day tidying up. This can include:

  • Putting away clothes or dishes

  • Sorting mail and papers

  • Wiping down kitchen counters or bathroom surfaces

  • Returning items to their designated spots

Short daily sessions prevent clutter from building up and keep your space feeling fresh.
